Is IPL Fixed? Lalit Modi Accuses N Srinivasan Of Umpire Fixing In Chennai Super Kings Matches, Shares Anecdote

Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has made serious allegations against N Srinivasan, a former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Modi claims that Srinivasan manipulated umpire appointments during Chennai Super Kings matches. He accused Srinivasan of placing umpires from Chennai in these games, which he considers a form of match-fixing.

In a conversation on Raj Shamani's YouTube channel, Modi stated, "He (N Srinivasan) didn't like IPL; he didn't think IPL will work but when it started to work everybody got the bandwagon. He was member and secretary of the board also so he was the biggest adversary of mine. I went up against him, so he did many things, umpire fixing, he said, 'I did it', Modi said in a recent interaction with Raj Shamani YouTube Channel."I accused him for it. He would change the umpire and I didn't think two things about it. But then I realized he is putting Chennai umpire in Chennai games, it's an issue for me. That's called fixing so when I tried to expose those, he went totally against me," he added.

Allegations on Player Bidding

Modi further alleged that Srinivasan influenced the bidding process for England cricketer Andrew Flintoff. According to Modi, other teams were instructed not to bid for Flintoff as Srinivasan wanted him for Chennai Super Kings. This manipulation was part of a broader strategy by Srinivasan to control aspects of the IPL.

Modi elaborated on this by saying, "Take out everything auction ringing, this ringing, I gave Flintoff to Srinivasan. Yes, we did. No doubt about it, every team knew about it. Srinivasan wasn't going to let IPL happen. He was a thorn in our bush. Yes, we told everybody not to bid for [Andrew] Flintoff," he said.

Challenges Faced by Lalit Modi

Modi expressed that organizing an event like IPL required overcoming numerous obstacles and dealing with influential figures like Srinivasan was part of that challenge. He mentioned that removing such hurdles was essential for the success of the tournament and ensuring its smooth operation.

"Yes, that I did because Srinivasan said I want Flintoff. But when you are trying to do an event like IPL and I did it single-handedly, you need to remove every thorn, what is bigger for the game. Every player is only for three months," Modi added.

The accusations have sparked discussions within cricket circles and among fans regarding integrity in sports administration. These revelations have raised questions about past practices within the IPL and how they might have affected fair play during its early years.
