IPL 2026: Sanju Samson Breaks Silence On Chennai Super Kings Captaincy Rumours

Sanju Samson comments on captaincy speculation at Chennai Super Kings following an 18 crore IPL 2026 trade, emphasising contribution, performance, and shared leadership rather than a formal title, while noting collaboration with Ruturaj Gaikwad and broader team dynamics.

Sanju Samson has cooled talk of a Chennai Super Kings captaincy change, stressing commitment over position. After a high-profile trade from Rajasthan Royals for Rs. 18 Crore before IPL 2026, many expected Samson to replace current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, but Samson now says the focus is on contributing, not taking over leadership.

On the field, Samson has already made a strong start for Chennai Super Kings. The wicketkeeper-batter has scored 402 runs in 10 matches, including two hundreds and a fifty. These performances have intensified debate about future leadership, yet Samson insists that personal milestones do not alter how the role is viewed within the team.

The speculation began soon after the trade that moved Samson from Rajasthan Royals to the five-time IPL champions. Some observers felt the size of the Rs. 18 Crore deal signalled a leadership transition. Samson, however, describes the move as a chance to join a new setup rather than negotiate power or status on arrival.

Samson addressed the situation on the Super Kings podcast hosted by Abhinav Mukund. Samson said, "I already had a team. I was already settled in a place. So I wanted to come out of there and join another team. In that kind of transaction, you can't actually have demands."

Continuing on that point, Samson added, "Honestly, when you are trying to get into a new home, you don't go there with demands — that's what I've learned, to be very honest. You go there and try to prove your worth. You try to behave the way you are, perform to the maximum, and then take things forward from there."

Despite Samson’s stance, several pundits still see captaincy in the future. R Ashwin, who has played with Samson before, believes leadership at Chennai Super Kings could come later. Ashwin said, "I'm no astrologer, but I do see Sanju captaining CSK at some stage. I don't know when, but I feel it could happen."

Samson explained that Chennai Super Kings already involve the wicketkeeper in key tactical calls, even without the captain’s title. Samson said, "Even during games, you can see the friendship between Ruturaj and me while we are fielding. We are both working together. That's something I'm really enjoying." Samson stressed that this cooperation helps the side beyond formal roles.

Samson highlighted how people from Keralam relocate across the world and stay loyal to employers for many years, seeing it as a reflection of trust. Samson said, "And there's another thing as well. Like in Chennai, there are a lot of people working from different places. There are many Malayalis here. If you go to Dubai, there are Malayalis there as well. Wherever you go, there are lots of people who work for proper companies."

Sharing further examples, Samson added, "So many people work in the same place for a very long period of time. In Dubai, there are people who work for the same company for 30-40 years." Samson then connected this loyalty to the trust Chennai Super Kings have shown since the trade ahead of IPL 2026.

Samson explained, "The reason is trust. Back home, if someone trusts you, gives you an opportunity and calls you to work for them, Malayalis will give their life for that trust. CSK has shown trust in me and invited me here, so I am ready to give my everything."

On expectations from the franchise, Samson said, "That's the attitude we always have — we are here to serve the franchise. I never came here thinking, 'Give me this, give me that.' I will definitely try to be myself, but I didn't come here with demands. I'm here to play for my team and for my captain."

Samson underlined that leadership is about actions rather than titles. Samson said, "I'm very involved in the decision-making as well. I'm also behaving like a leader. You don't always have to do certain things officially to be a leader, right? I think I naturally do those things in whichever team I play for." For now, Samson’s focus in IPL 2026 stays on performance and shared leadership beside Ruturaj Gaikwad.
