IPL 2025: Retain Virat Kohli, Change Captain Faf du Plessis, Experts Advise To Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are expected to be selective with their player retentions ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. Experts Ajay Jadeja and Aakash Chopra have shared insights on the team's strategy. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), retaining players involves significant costs, with the first retention costing Rs 18 crore, followed by Rs 14 crore and Rs 11 crore for subsequent retentions.
Virat Kohli, a long-standing member of RCB since the IPL's inception, is almost certain to be retained. However, Aakash Chopra has raised questions about Faf du Plessis's future with the team. Speaking on JioCinema, Chopra expressed doubts about RCB retaining their captain due to his age and performance in recent tournaments like the CPL.

Retention Strategy and Key Players
Ajay Jadeja believes that RCB will make careful decisions regarding their retentions. He emphasised that Virat Kohli's retention is as obvious as MS Dhoni's for Chennai Super Kings. Jadeja also highlighted Rajat Patidar's importance to the team, praising his style and contribution to RCB's recent successes.
Jadeja mentioned Anuj Rawat as another potential retention candidate due to his impressive performances alongside Patidar. He noted that high-quality wicketkeeper-batsmen are rare, making Rawat a valuable asset for RCB. The team may focus on retaining two or three key players while considering changes in overseas players annually.
Overseas Player Considerations
The team's approach towards overseas players appears flexible, with a tendency to alter styles each year. Jadeja suggested that retaining Mohammed Siraj and Yash Dayal could be emotionally driven decisions. If the current management remains unchanged, Dayal might be prioritised over Siraj; otherwise, new leadership might opt for a fresh start.
Aakash Chopra elaborated on Faf du Plessis's situation, stating that while he remains an active cricketer, his performance hasn't been outstanding recently. "All good stories come to an end," he remarked, indicating that RCB might not see du Plessis as part of their long-term plans.
The retention rules set by BCCI allow franchises to retain up to five players but at increasing costs. This financial aspect plays a crucial role in shaping teams' strategies during auctions. With these considerations in mind, RCB aims to build a competitive squad for future seasons.
The upcoming IPL mega auction presents challenges and opportunities for teams like RCB. Balancing player retention costs with building a strong squad requires strategic planning. As experts suggest, judicious decisions will be key in determining which players remain part of RCB's journey forward.
