India vs Sri Lanka T20, ODI Series 2024: Former Star Sanath Jayasuriya Named As Sri Lanka's Interim Head Coach

Weeks ahead of much anticipated, India vs Sri Lanka T20 and ODI series, Sri Lankan Cricket Board has named former captain and legendary batsman Sanath Jayasuriya as interim Head Coach of Sri Lanka's national cricket team. Jayasuriya's appointment was done after Sri Lanka's head coach Chris Silverwood stepped down from his post following the team's early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Under Silverwood's guidance, Sri Lanka won the 2022 T20 Asia Cup and was runners-up in the 2023 ODI Asia Cup.

According to the reports, Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed for Sri Lanka's next two series slated to be played against India and England.

A source with ICC told the media that Sanath Jayasuriya will take Sri Lanka's head coach's job till September 2024.

India will tour Sri Lanka for 3 T20 and 3 ODI games starting from July 27, 2024.

The news was confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket Board CEO Ashley De Silva, who highlighted Sanath Jayasuriya's illuminated career and achievements and expressed happiness on this appointment as interim Head Coach.

"Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well-positioned to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution," Ashley said.

Sanath Jayasuriya has also served as chief selector for Sri Lanka's national side and was the mentor for the side in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, won by India.

The 55-year-old made his international debut for Sri Lanka in 1989. He represented his country in more than 586 International matches to score 21032 runs all formats of the game. Sanath Jayasuriya played 445 ODIs to collect 13430 runs, which is second highest after Kumar Sangakkara. He also played 110 red ball games, to score 6973 runs. In the shortest format, Sanath Jayasuriya has 629 runs from 31 T20I against his name.
