India vs Pakistan WCL Match Cancelled After Player Withdrawals Over Pahalgam Attack
The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) has been officially cancelled. Scheduled for Sunday, July 20, at Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham, the match was called off following the withdrawal of key Indian players, including Shikhar Dhawan, in protest against rising India-Pakistan tensions.
Shikhar Dhawan Takes a Stand
Shikhar Dhawan publicly confirmed his decision not to participate, citing the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists. Sharing a letter addressed to the organisers, Dhawan stated:

"Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota."
("The decision I made on May 11 still stands. My country is everything to me-nothing comes before it.")
Although the BCCI has no official involvement in this privately-run league, Dhawan had earlier informed organisers via call and WhatsApp about his stance, which he later reiterated in writing.
Other Cricketers Follow
Former Indian players Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan also withdrew from the match in solidarity, prompting the WCL organisers to cancel the fixture. No announcement has been made yet regarding a possible rematch if both teams advance to the tournament's final.
Edgbaston Confirms Cancellation
Edgbaston Stadium released a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirming the cancellation and advising fans not to attend. The venue will remain closed on Sunday, and full ticket refunds will be issued to all buyers.
Background: A Delicate Diplomatic Issue
India and Pakistan have not played bilateral cricket since 2012, with matches limited to ICC and ACC tournaments. The WCL, being a private event, operates outside those frameworks, making personal decisions by players all the more impactful.
