Gautam Gambhir vs Ajit Agarkar Over Shreyas Iyer's Selection For Champions Trophy 2025

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had a heated argument over selection of Shreyas Iyer in India Team for the Champions Trophy 2025, said media reports.

It was learned that Indian team management, led by Gambhir, ultimately supported KL Rahul over Agarkar's preference for Rishabh Pant as the first-choice wicketkeeper for both the ICC tournament and England ODIs.

Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar

Ajit Agarkar had previously stated during a Champions Trophy press conference that Pant was the preferred wicketkeeper. However, Pant didn't play any matches in the England series, while Rahul featured in all three games due to support from Rohit Sharma and Gambhir for continuity.

Iyer's recent batting performances have been noteworthy, earning him a spot in the team. However, this decision sparked a heated debate between Gambhir and Agarkar during the selection meeting.

India's middle-order strength was evident in their recent ODI series against England. The players batting from positions four to seven collectively scored 375 runs across three innings, boasting an impressive strike rate of 116.42. This included three half-centuries, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the leading run-scorer.

Team India's Middle Order Dynamics

The Indian team's strategy has shifted from a top-order focus to a more balanced approach, emphasising middle-order strength. This change was apparent in both the Champions Trophy 2017 and the ODI World Cup 2019. Despite this progress, uncertainties remain regarding fixed batting slots, as Gambhir prefers a left-right combination.

In contrast to India's middle order, England's batters in similar positions managed only 278 runs at an average of 23.16, with just two fifties. Initially, there were discussions about dropping Iyer for a left-right top-order experiment, but he proved his worth by scoring two fifties and accumulating 181 runs at an average of 60.33.

Team Composition

The final squad for India's Champions Trophy includes Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar and Varun Chakaravarthy.

Gambhir has made it clear that KL Rahul will be India's preferred wicketkeeper choice moving forward.
