Dilip Doshi Death: Ex-India Cricketer Dies at 77 Due to Cardiac Arrest

Dilip Doshi, the former Indian left-arm spinner, has passed away at 77 in London. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed his death on Monday. Doshi played 33 Tests and 15 One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 1979 and 1983. He succumbed to a cardiac arrest. His wife, Kalindi, and son, Nayan, survive him.

The Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) expressed deep sorrow over Doshi's passing. They described him as a revered figure in cricket who left behind a legacy of sportsmanship and excellence. "Doshi was a true and spirited Saurashtrian and a legendary left-arm leg-spinner in the cricket world," stated the SCA.

Cricket Career Highlights

In his Test career, Doshi took 114 wickets, while he claimed 22 wickets in ODIs. He was one of the few cricketers to achieve over 100 Test wickets after debuting at age 30. During his debut against Australia in 1979, he recorded figures of 6/103, helping India draw the match.

Doshi's performance against Australia continued to impress as he secured an 8/103 match-haul, leading India to an innings victory. Earlier this month, he attended both the BCCI awards function and the World Test Championship final at Lord's.

Legacy and Tributes

Niranjan Shah, former BCCI secretary, expressed personal grief over Doshi's demise. "It is an extremely painful and personal loss for me," Shah said. He praised Doshi as not only a legendary cricketer but also one of the finest human beings he had known.

Doshi followed India's famous spin quartet: Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, and Bishan Singh Bedi. He excelled with 898 First-Class wickets and represented Saurashtra and Bengal domestically. Internationally, he played for Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire.

The BCCI expressed their condolences on X by stating: "The BCCI mourns the sad demise of former India spinner, Dilip Doshi... May his soul rest in peace." His contributions to cricket remain celebrated by fans and players alike.
