Chennai Super Kings Invites Young Opener Ayush Mhatre For IPL 2025 Trial
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, are on the lookout for fresh talent as they consider adding 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre to their roster. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, CSK has extended an invitation to Mhatre for a selection trial. This move comes after the legendary former India and CSK captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, reportedly took notice of Mhatre's potential. With the fifth round of the Ranji Trophy concluding on November 16, CSK will have a window of eight days to assess Mhatre's capabilities if he participates in the trial.
Mhatre made a notable entry into first-class cricket during his debut for Mumbai in the Irani Cup, facing the Rest of India and opening the innings with Prithvi Shaw. In his debut match, Mhatre scored 19 and 14 runs across two innings. Although his performance has been modest—with 321 runs from five games at an average of 35.66, including one century and one half-century—his standout innings of 176 against Maharashtra has caught the attention of talent scouts. Notably, CSK's interest was piqued enough for their Managing Director and CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, to request that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) allow Mhatre to attend a trial at their CSKHPC Navalur grounds.

The significance of this trial stems from CSK's strategy for the upcoming mega auction. With a budget of Rs 55 crore and key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, Shivam Dube, and Dhoni already retained, the addition of a promising young talent like Mhatre could bolster their lineup, particularly at the top of the order alongside captain Gaikwad. The trial, scheduled between the end of the Ranji Trophy and the start of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, presents a critical opportunity for both Mhatre and CSK to evaluate their potential partnership.
The Times of India report highlights Dhoni's influence in spotting Mhatre's talent, underscoring the legendary cricketer's keen eye for emerging players. With the mega auction set for November 24 and 25, CSK's decision to evaluate Mhatre closely reflects their commitment to nurturing young talent, a strategy that could enrich their squad for the IPL 2025 season and beyond.
