BGT 2024-25 Ind Vs Aus: Isa Guha Apologises For 'Racist Remark' Against Jasprit Bumrah; Ravi Shastri Reacts
During the third Test match between India and Australia in Brisbane, a controversy erupted when Isa Guha, a former England women's cricketer, referred to Jasprit Bumrah as a "primate" while discussing his bowling skills. This comment sparked outrage among fans on social media. Before the start of play on Day 3, Guha apologised for her remark, explaining that she intended it as high praise for the Indian pacer.
Guha had described Bumrah as "MVP - Most Valuable Primate" and commented on his importance to India's performance. She stated, "He is the one that's going to do all the talking for India and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match and whether he would be fit. He needs some support though." On Monday morning, Guha addressed the issue during Fox Cricket's broadcast.

Apology and Clarification
Guha expressed regret for her choice of words, saying, "Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. I'd like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect of others." She emphasised that her intention was to praise one of India's greatest players.
She further explained, "If you listen to the full transcript I only meant the highest praise for one of India's greatest players. And someone that I admire greatly. I'm an advocate for equality and someone who has spent their career thinking about inclusion and understanding in the game." Guha's apology was shared widely on social media.
Response from Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri, former head coach of Team India, responded positively to Guha's apology. He praised her courage for addressing the issue live on television. Shastri remarked, "Brave woman, to apologise on live television takes some steel. You heard it from the horse's mouth so as far as I am concerned, game's over."
Shastri acknowledged that mistakes happen under pressure and added, "People are entitled to make mistakes, we are all human. In the heat of the moment, sometimes when you have the mic in your hand, things can happen. Let's move on." His comments highlighted understanding and forgiveness.
Guha concluded by expressing hope that her words did not overshadow what had been an exciting Test match so far. She said she looked forward to seeing how it progresses. As someone with South Asian heritage herself, she hoped people would recognise there was no malice intended in her remarks.
