During the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai, Shubman Gill, vice-captain of India, reunited with Simranjeet Singh, a spinner for the United Arab Emirates. The two have known each other since childhood. India started their campaign with a dominant nine-wicket victory over UAE. UAE batted first and were dismissed for just 57 runs, with Kuldeep Yadav taking four wickets.

India chased down the target in just 4.3 overs, with Gill contributing an unbeaten 20 runs off nine balls. Despite being on the losing side, it was a special moment for Simranjeet Singh when he met Gill after many years. Before the match, Simranjeet had shared his memories of bowling to Gill at the Punjab Cricket Association nets in Mohali during their younger days.

Childhood Memories Rekindled

Simranjeet recalled training sessions from around 2011-12 when Gill was about 11 or 12 years old. They practiced at the PCA Academy in Mohali from early morning until late morning. Simranjeet wasn't sure if Gill would remember him after so many years apart. However, all doubts vanished when Gill embraced him warmly after leading India to victory.

The reunion was marked by a memorable hug between the two players after Gill hit the winning runs against Simranjeet's bowling. This gesture left Simranjeet smiling and reminiscing about their shared past. "I have known Shubman since he was a kid," Simranjeet mentioned before the match.

The game itself was a comfortable outing for Team India as they began their Asia Cup journey on a high note. Suryakumar Yadav, India's captain, praised his team's clinical performance and highlighted their positive attitude and energy on the field. He noted that although the pitch looked good, it played slower than expected, giving spinners an advantage.
