Court Authorises Transfer of Diego Maradona's Remains to Public Mausoleum in Buenos Aires

A court in Argentina has approved the exhumation of Diego Maradona's remains from a private cemetery. The decision allows for his reburial in a public mausoleum currently being built in Buenos Aires. This ruling, made by the San Isidro court near the capital, was requested by Maradona's children. The football icon passed away in 2020 at the age of 60.

Maradonas Remains to Move to Public Mausoleum

Maradona's daughter, Dalma, expressed on social media that they always believed his resting place should be accessible to the public. She emphasised the importance of security but also wanted fans to have a place to pay their respects and leave flowers. Maradona was initially buried at Jardín de Bella Vista cemetery, located about 50 kilometres from Buenos Aires.

Public Memorial Plans

The "M10 Memorial" project was unveiled in 2023 during a ceremony with most of Maradona's children present. A pantheon is being constructed in Puerto Madero, a prestigious area of Buenos Aires. The court granted Maradona's five children the right to move his remains for "humanitarian and emotional reasons," allowing them to choose when this will occur.

In addition to these developments, eight individuals, including medical professionals, are facing trial. They are accused of contributing to Maradona's death by cardiorespiratory arrest. This legal action highlights ongoing concerns about the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The decision to relocate Maradona's remains reflects his enduring legacy and the desire for fans to honour him publicly. As construction continues on the mausoleum, many await the opportunity to visit and celebrate the life of one of football's greatest figures.
