China Triumphs in Artistic Swimming at Paris Olympics, Leading US and Spain

China clinched the gold medal in the artistic swimming team event at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday night, with the United States securing silver and Spain taking bronze. This victory marked China's dominance in the sport, especially in the absence of Russia, which had previously won every gold medal since the 2000 Sydney Games.

China Wins Olympic Artistic Swimming

Artistic Swimming Evolution

The sport, formerly known as synchronized swimming, has undergone significant changes to modernise its image. Adam Andrasko, head of USA Artistic Swimming, stated, "There is attention to the sport that has never happened before. This is an absolutely different sport." Despite these updates, some swimmers still refer to it as "synchro."

China's team scored 996.1389 points, surpassing the Americans' 914.3421 and Spain's 900.7319. This achievement was particularly notable for the U.S., marking their first medal in artistic swimming since 2004. The sport now showcases more acrobatic routines, highlighting female athleticism through power, endurance, and energy.

Acrobatic Routines and New Elements

Wednesday's acrobatic routines followed technical and free routines held on Monday and Tuesday. Each team must include seven above-water elements in their performance. A swimmer known as the "flier" is launched two meters (six feet) above the water to perform flips, twists, and dives. This is achieved from a base of swimmers who are not allowed to touch the pool's bottom.

The sport now features more muscular routines and innovative tricks like the Moonwalk routine performed by the Americans on Tuesday. This routine involves swimmers performing upside down with their heads underwater. These changes have added a dramatic edge similar to figure skating.

Judging Changes and Increased Risks

New rules and judging criteria adopted about 18 months ago have transformed artistic swimming into a form of gymnastics on water. The risks involved have also increased significantly. Andrasko commented on this evolution: "People are pleasantly confused about how in the world these women can do what they do."

Men were given a chance to compete in artistic swimming at the Olympics for the first time; however, no men were selected by any teams. There is ongoing consideration to add a mixed duet team event for Los Angeles 2028, which would provide more opportunities for men to participate.

Andrasko noted the challenges faced in preparing male athletes for this opportunity: "There was not nearly enough time for nearly enough males to prepare for this chance. It was a challenge to step up interest in a year and a half before the Olympics."

The smiles, makeup, and hair gelatin remain part of artistic swimming's tradition, but today's performances are far removed from the water ballet once watched by previous generations under flowery rubber caps.

The inclusion of new elements and routines has brought fresh attention to artistic swimming, making it an exciting spectacle at the Paris Olympics. The sport continues to evolve, promising even more thrilling performances in future competitions.

China's victory and the U.S.'s return to the podium signify important milestones for artistic swimming. The potential addition of mixed duet events could further expand participation and interest in this dynamic sport.

The Paris Olympics showcased how artistic swimming has transformed into a display of athletic prowess and creativity, captivating audiences worldwide with its innovative routines and high-energy performances.
