Can Better Sleep Propel India's Olympic Success? IOA Taps Sleep Expert For Paris Olympics
In preparation for the upcoming Paris Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has taken proactive steps to ensure that its athletes receive comprehensive sleep support, marking a first in their Olympic preparations.
Dr Monika Sharma, a renowned sleep expert from Sleep Moksha in Panchkula, Haryana, has been engaged since December to oversee and implement specialized sleep optimization programs tailored to the needs of Indian athletes, as reported by The Hindu.

IOA Taps Sleep Expert For Paris Olympics
The initiative began when IOA officials recognized the impactful results of Dr. Sharma's sleep wellness practices for athletes at Sleep Moksha. Her expertise in Behavioral Sleep Medicine, spanning over 14 years, has been crucial in addressing the specific challenges faced by athletes, such as difficulties in falling and staying asleep, often exacerbated by factors like travel-induced jet lag and adapting to new environments, as reported by The Hindu.
Dr. Sharma highlighted the importance of sleep in an athlete's recovery process, emphasizing that quality rest is essential for both physiological and cognitive reasons. She noted that while modern athletes face numerous commitments that can disrupt healthy sleep habits, effective management is critical for achieving peak performance in sports that often hinge on marginal gains.
Under Dr. Sharma's guidance, Indian athletes have received personalized sleep training tailored to their individual schedules and requirements. According to media reports, some athletes have already travelled to Europe to acclimate to similar time zones and conditions expected in Paris, ensuring they are well-prepared for the competition.
To further support athletes' sleep hygiene, the IOA has equipped them with a sleep travel kit containing essentials such as eye masks, earplugs, and neck pillows. Additionally, sleep pods will be available at the Games Village, providing athletes with a quiet and controlled environment to address any disruptions in their sleep patterns during the intense competition period.
Dr. Sharma also cautioned against the indiscriminate use of sleep medications, which athletes may resort to out of desperation for immediate relief from sleep issues. She stressed that while medications can offer temporary relief, they do not address the underlying causes and may lead to dependency and other health risks, according to The Hindu.
Looking ahead to the Paris Olympics scheduled from July 26 to August 11, the IOA is optimistic about building on India's success from the previous Tokyo Olympics, where the contingent achieved a record haul of seven medals. The focus remains on ensuring that athletes are mentally and physically prepared to perform at their best, with effective sleep management playing a crucial role in their overall well-being and competitive edge.
