Brittney Griner's Tears of Joy Mark Third Olympic Gold After Harrowing Ordeal

Standing on the medal podium with her third gold medal, Brittney Griner gazed at the U.S. flag, tears streaming down her face during the national anthem. She didn't wipe them away until the anthem ended, showing her deep emotions about representing her country 612 days after returning from a Russian prison.

Griners Emotional Olympic Gold

Griner's journey back to this moment was long and arduous. Two years ago, she was in a Russian penal colony, uncertain if she would ever return home or play basketball again. Sentenced to nine years for drug possession and smuggling, she spent 10 months in jail before being part of a prisoner exchange in December 2022.

Griner's Emotional Return

After the U.S. narrowly defeated France 67-66 to win an eighth consecutive gold medal in women's basketball, Griner expressed her gratitude. "This one meant a lot to me," she said. "Just having a chance to play for gold, represent my country, what my country did for me? Yeah, this is the highest on the pinnacle right here."

During the game, Griner scored four quick points and grabbed two rebounds. She celebrated with hugs from Lisa Leslie and others at Bercy Arena, where French President Emmanuel Macron was present. The victory was especially sweet given the circumstances.

Teammates' Support

Teammate Diana Taurasi, who advocated for Griner's release during her detention, stood nearby during the medal ceremony. Taurasi noted Griner's gratitude and resilience: "She's a person that is grateful for all the support that she got through all this," Taurasi said. "And it wasn't easy. And it's still not easy for her."

Griner now has three gold medals playing for the U.S., planning to place this one next to her newborn son, Bash. Reflecting on her journey, she said, "It was a long journey, a hard journey to get back into it. I'm just happy that my body was able to hold up and be able to be here."

Appreciating Every Moment

Griner has learned to cherish every moment at the Olympics more than before. In 2021, she led the U.S. with 30 points in a gold-medal game in Tokyo. Her ordeal in Russia made her appreciate everyday activities like waking up and going to practice.

"Waking up, going to practice, even when you don't want to practice, having the opportunity to do that because we overlook it," she said. "That's the opportunity that we get to do and I just cherish every second I can now."

During these Games, another high-profile prisoner exchange occurred hours before Griner took the court during pool play. Knowing more Americans were coming home made her "head over heels" happy.

Griner celebrated with her teammates at midcourt after their victory, taking a team selfie with her right hand while holding up her latest gold medal with her left hand. This moment was undoubtedly one to remember.

The gold medal game was just icing on the cake for Griner, who had been playing basketball in Russia during the WNBA offseason when detained. She vowed never to play internationally again except with USA Basketball.

This victory marked a significant milestone in Griner's life and career, symbolising resilience and gratitude for the support she received throughout her ordeal.
