BCCI Enforces Red-Ball Cricket Rule for Indian Players
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it mandatory for centrally contracted Indian players to participate in domestic red-ball cricket. BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasized that there will be no excuses accepted, and players must play at least three to four matches in the Ranji Trophy to be eligible for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In a significant move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it mandatory for its centrally contracted players to participate in red-ball cricket in the domestic circuit. BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced this decision during an interaction with the media in Rajkot on Wednesday.

No Excuses for Not Playing Red-Ball Cricket
Shah emphasized that the BCCI will not tolerate any excuses from players who refuse to follow instructions given by the team management regarding playing red-ball cricket. He stated that the chairman of selectors will have the authority to make decisions if a player fails to comply with these instructions.
Minimum Ranji Trophy Appearances for IPL Eligibility
As reported earlier, the BCCI is considering making it mandatory for Indian players to appear in at least three or four matches of the Ranji Trophy to be eligible for participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shah confirmed that players have been informed about this requirement and will receive written communication in the form of letters.
Guidance from National Cricket Academy
Shah clarified that the BCCI's decision is based on guidance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. He mentioned that the BCCI does not intend to impose any restrictions on players whose bodies may not be able to handle both white-ball and red-ball cricket.
Free Hand to Chairman of Selectors
Shah reiterated that the mandate to play red-ball cricket applies to all fit and young centrally contracted players. He emphasized that the BCCI will not tolerate any tantrums or excuses in this regard. The chairman of the selection committee has been given the freedom to make decisions independently in such matters.
Support for Players' Personal Leaves
Shah acknowledged the importance of supporting players who need leaves for personal reasons. He cited the example of Virat Kohli, who has made himself unavailable for the ongoing five-match Test series against England. Shah expressed trust in Kohli's integrity and stated that the BCCI must back its players.
Updates on Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami
Regarding Virat Kohli's availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup, Shah refrained from providing any details. He stated that discussions about Kohli's participation will take place at a later time. Shah also mentioned that information about Mohammed Shami's fitness and availability will be provided once the bowler recovers.
The BCCI's decision to mandate red-ball cricket participation for centrally contracted players is a significant step towards strengthening the domestic circuit and ensuring a healthy balance between white-ball and red-ball cricket in India. This move will provide opportunities for players to develop their skills in the longer format and contribute to the overall growth of Indian cricket.
