Many homes in India still rely on traditional cooking fuels like firewood and cow dung. This not only harms the environment but also poses serious health risks, especially to women. To address this, the government launched a significant scheme to bring clean cooking fuel to those who need it most.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)?

Launched on May 1, 2016, by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship program. Its main goal is to provide Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections to households living in rural and underserved areas. Before PMUY, many families depended on less healthy and environmentally damaging cooking methods.

Who is this scheme for?

This scheme specifically targets women from economically backward families who currently don't have an LPG connection. It aims to empower them by giving them access to cleaner cooking fuel, thereby improving their health and reducing household air pollution.

Why is PMUY important?

PMUY plays a crucial role in improving the lives of millions of Indian women. By replacing harmful traditional fuels, it significantly reduces indoor air pollution, which is a major cause of respiratory diseases. It also contributes to environmental protection and saves women valuable time previously spent collecting firewood. The scheme has successfully expanded LPG access across the nation, bringing us closer to universal coverage.

Objective

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) offers free LPG connections to women heading households that fall below the poverty line, aiming to provide access to clean cooking fuel.

Benefits

  • Rs. 1600 for a connection 14.2kg cylinder or Rs. 1150 for a 5 kg cylinder.
