Details

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a government initiative aimed at providing clean cooking fuel to households that currently rely on traditional, unhygienic sources like firewood and cow dung. Launched to improve the health of women and protect the environment, it focuses on bringing LPG connections to rural and underserved communities.

What Is This Scheme?

Introduced in May 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, PMUY's main goal is to offer LPG connections to families that couldn't afford them. This scheme helps replace polluting cooking fuels with cleaner LPG, reducing indoor air pollution and its harmful effects on health. The scheme was officially launched on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

Who Can Benefit From This Scheme?

The scheme is designed for adult women who belong to poor households and do not currently have an LPG connection. Specific categories include those listed in the SECC 2011 data, SC/ST households, beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), forest dwellers, Most Backward Classes (MBC), and people from tea garden areas or river islands. If not falling into these categories, a household can still apply by submitting a 14-point declaration confirming their poor household status.

Why This Scheme Is Important

PMUY is crucial for improving the quality of life for millions of Indian women. By providing access to clean cooking fuel, it significantly reduces the health risks associated with breathing smoke from burning wood or other solid fuels. This leads to better health outcomes, especially for women and children. Furthermore, it contributes to environmental protection by reducing the dependence on traditional biomass fuels.
