Details

Looking to harness the power of the sun and reduce your electricity bills? The Phase II Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme is here to help! Introduced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, with the Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) as the nodal agency, this scheme is designed to significantly expand solar energy adoption in the Union Territory.

What Is This Scheme?

This is the second phase of a larger initiative to promote solar power generation right from your rooftops. It focuses on setting up solar panels connected to the main electricity grid. The goal is to achieve a massive 220MW capacity in Jammu & Kashmir, split between a 20MW residential scheme and a 200MW 'Solar City Mission' for Jammu.

Who Can Benefit From This Scheme?

This program is primarily for residential consumers and Group Housing Societies in Jammu & Kashmir. If you own a home, have an electricity connection in your name, pay your bills on time, and have permission to use your roof for solar panels, you're likely eligible.

Why This Scheme Is Important

The main idea is to encourage everyone, from homes to businesses and government buildings, to adopt solar power. It aims to make electricity providers (DISCOMs) a key part of this solar revolution, build awareness about solar energy, develop skills, and promote sustainable ways to do business. By increasing solar capacity, the country aims for better energy security and a cleaner environment.

Objective

This programme by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) aims to boost rooftop solar installations in Jammu & Kashmir, targeting a cumulative capacity of 220MW.

    2. To be eligible, you must have an active electricity connection in your name and regularly pay your electricity bills.
    3. You also need permission from the property owner to install solar panels on the roof if you are not the owner yourself.

    How To Apply

You can apply for the installation of a solar rooftop system through the online portal. Here’s the general procedure:

    1. Visit the National Portal for Rooftop Solar: http://solarrooftop.gov.in.
    2. The portal provides links to the online portals of your local electricity distribution company (DISCOM).
    3. Complete the application form on the respective DISCOM's portal.
    4. You will need to submit necessary documents and pay your beneficiary share of the cost.

    Documents Required

    • A copy of your latest electricity bill.

    FAQ’s

How can I apply to get a solar rooftop system installed?

You can apply by visiting the online portal at http://solarrooftop.gov.in. This portal will direct you to your local electricity provider's (DISCOM) online application page where you can submit your request.

What is the guarantee period for solar components?

Solar panels come with a warranty for their output capacity, ensuring at least 90% at the end of 12 years and 80% at the end of 25 years. Other parts like inverters, wiring, and installation workmanship are covered by a minimum 5-year warranty against any manufacturing or installation defects.

Can I install solar panels if I live in a rented apartment?

Yes, you can install a rooftop solar system if you have an electricity connection in your name, regularly pay your bills, and have written permission from the property owner to install panels on the roof.

How much subsidy can I get for my rooftop solar system?

For residential users, the government provides a subsidy (Central Financial Assistance - CFA) of 40% on the benchmark cost or tendered rates for capacities up to 3 kW. For capacities above 3 kW and up to 10 kW, the CFA is 20%. Group Housing Societies can also get a subsidy of 20% for capacities up to 500 kW, with a limit of 10 kW per house.

What is a Grid Connected Rooftop Solar PV System?

This is a solar power system where the electricity generated by solar panels is converted from DC to AC power and then sent directly into the main electricity grid. It's like your solar panels are helping power your home and also feeding excess energy back into the grid.

What is the government's target for rooftop solar installations nationwide?

The government has set an ambitious target to install 40,000 MW (40 GW) of Rooftop Solar (RTS) power across the country by the year 2022.

Do I have to pay the entire cost for a subsidized rooftop solar system?

No, you do not pay the full cost. After the eligible subsidy (CFA) is calculated based on the lowest discovered project cost (L1 rate), you only need to pay the remaining balance amount.

What are the main benefits of having a Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar System?

You get to save on your electricity bills, utilize empty roof space without needing extra land, and contribute to energy security and reduced carbon emissions. It also helps improve local grid stability and manage peak power demand effectively.

Approximately how much roof space is needed for a 1 KW solar system?

Generally, a 1 kW rooftop solar system requires about 10 square meters of clear, shadow-free roof space. This can vary slightly depending on the efficiency of the solar panels and how they are arranged.

How does the subsidy work for different sectors?

Central financial assistance (subsidy) is exclusively for the residential sector. For other sectors like government, commercial, or industrial, there is no CFA available under this programme.
