    Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible for this internship, you must be a student from a recognized University or Institute. You should be pursuing one of the following:

    1. A 5-year Integrated M.Sc./M.Sc. Tech./M. Tech. program, currently in your 7th to 9th semester.
    2. A 3-year M.Sc./M.Sc. Tech. program, currently in your 3rd to 5th semester.
    3. A 2-year M.Sc. /M.Sc. Tech. / M. Tech. program, currently in your 2nd to 3rd semester.
    4. A final year B.Sc. student.

    How To Apply

    1. Interested candidates must fill out the application in the prescribed format available on the NCESS website.
    2. Applications are accepted twice a year:
      • February 1st to February 28th
      • September 1st to September 30th
    3. Shortlisted candidates will be announced on the NCESS website. The list will include the allocated supervisor and the project title.
    4. Selected candidates must bring a printout of their application form, duly signed by the Head of Department with an official seal, when they arrive for training.

    Students are required to undergo a minimum of 8 weeks of continuous training at NCESS to complete their internship, training, or dissertation.

    Can I choose my own supervisor for the internship?

    No, neither students nor supervisors can choose each other. A suitable supervisor will be assigned to you based on your research interests and the available expertise at NCESS.

    Is accommodation or transport provided by NCESS?

    NCESS does not provide any accommodation or transport facilities for project students. You will need to arrange these yourself.

    When are the application windows for internships at NCESS?

    You can submit your applications for internships, training, or dissertation projects during February (from the 1st to the 28th) and September (from the 1st to the 30th) each year. The online application form will be active during these periods.

    What are the academic programs NCESS is known for?

    Are field trips permitted during the internship?

    Only day field trips are allowed. Overnight stays for field trips are not permitted. Any fieldwork requires prior approval from the Visiting Students Committee and the Director of NCESS.

    Is there a fee to undertake a project at NCESS?

    No, there is no fee charged for carrying out project work at the National Centre for Earth Science Studies.

    What is the process for selecting interns?

    Candidates who are shortlisted and approved by the Director of NCESS will have their names announced on the website. This announcement typically happens in the first week of May and the first week of December. The notification will also state the assigned supervisor and the project title.

    Do I need to give a presentation at the end of the internship?

    Yes, at the end of your training or dissertation, you must deliver a 15-minute presentation, which includes 10 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for discussion. After this, your supervisor will sign your report or dissertation, which you then submit to the visiting students' committee for your certificate. Your report also needs to be submitted to the NCESS library.
