Details

The North Eastern Council (NEC) under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is offering a significant scholarship opportunity for students hailing from the North Eastern States. Known as the NEC Merit Scholarship, this scheme aims to support students pursuing higher professional courses, whether they are studying within the Northeast region or elsewhere in India.

What Is This Scheme?

The NEC Merit Scholarship is designed to ease the financial burden on students from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim. It covers various levels of study, including Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate, and even M.Phil./Ph.D. courses, provided the institution is recognized by the Government. The scholarship funds are disbursed through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

Who Can Benefit From This Scheme?

This scholarship is specifically for students who are permanent residents of any of the eight North Eastern States. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in recognized institutions for Diploma, Degree, Postgraduate, M.Phil., or Ph.D. courses. A key condition is that the applicant's parent or guardian's annual income from all sources should not exceed ₹8,00,000/-. Additionally, specific academic performance criteria must be met in the qualifying examinations for each level of study.

Why This Scheme Is Important

The NEC Merit Scholarship plays a crucial role in promoting higher education and specialized professional training among the youth of the Northeast. By providing financial assistance, it removes economic barriers that might otherwise prevent talented students from pursuing their academic goals. This contributes to the development of skilled manpower in the region, addressing its unique requirements.

    • Students in integrated courses will receive the scholarship for the full duration.
    • M.Phil. scholarships are available for 2 years, and Ph.D. scholarships for 3 years.

    Selection and Disbursement:

    • Merit lists are prepared based on verified applications via the NSP.
    • For M.Phil. and Ph.D., selection is based on research topics/synopsis relevant to the North-Eastern Region's issues.
    • Selection is strictly merit-based, considering marks in qualifying exams and state-allotted quotas.
    • Unfilled state quotas may be redistributed to eligible students from other NE states based on merit.
    • Scholarships are directly disbursed by NEC to the student's verified bank account via DBT.

    Renewal of Scholarship:

    • Renewals are typically for one academic year.
    • Eligible beneficiaries must apply for renewal on NSP annually.
    • Students need to upload their previous year's marksheet/pass certificate. M.Phil./Ph.D. students need a progress report from their guide.
    • To renew, students must have passed the year or been promoted to the next semester/year. A pending backlog for more than one year disqualifies renewal.
    • Any break in scholarship will make the student ineligible for further scholarship for that course. Students may reapply as fresh applicants for advanced courses later.
    • Changing the subject of study or institution may lead to non-renewal.
    • No merit list is generated for renewal applications.
    • Renewal scholarships are disbursed by NEC via DBT to verified bank accounts.
    • Scholarships from Academic Year 2019-20 and earlier were processed as per the then-prevailing procedure, with State Governments disbursing funds.
