- Athletes must have been members of the state senior team for at least three consecutive years (e.g., 2019-20, 2020-21 & 2021-22) and participated in National Games or National Senior Championships during these years. They must also have won a medal in the year for which the award is recommended.
- Participation in international competitions like the Olympic Games, World Championship/World Cup, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championship, Commonwealth Championship, or SAF Games will also make a player eligible.

- The award is presented to male and female sportspersons in 31 sports disciplines, including Swimming, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing & Kayaking, Cycling, Horse Riding, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Rowing, Shooting, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting/Best Physique, Wrestling, Taekwondo, Yachting, Golf, Cricket, Soft Tennis, Karate, and Wushu.
