Details

Farming in India is getting a tech upgrade! The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) is a government initiative designed to make farming more efficient and profitable. It's all about bringing the right tools and machinery to farmers across the country.

What Is This Scheme?

The SMAM scheme focuses on increasing the use of modern agricultural machinery. The goal is to ensure that farmers have access to equipment that helps them complete tasks on time and with greater precision. This helps boost overall crop yield and farm income. The scheme operates with both central and state government funding, with specific ratios depending on the region.

Who Can Benefit From This Scheme?

This scheme is designed to support a wide range of individuals and groups involved in agriculture. This includes individual farmers, Self Help Groups (SHGs), User Groups, Cooperative Societies, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and even entrepreneurs looking to start custom hiring services for farm machinery.

Why This Scheme Is Important

Small landholdings can make it difficult for individual farmers to afford expensive machinery. SMAM addresses this by promoting 'Custom Hiring Centres' where farmers can rent equipment at affordable rates. It also aims to increase the availability of farm power, especially in areas where mechanization is currently low. The scheme focuses on increasing awareness, providing training, and ensuring that the machinery available is tested and certified for performance. A special focus is also given to promoting mechanization in the North-Eastern Region.

Objective

Launched in 2014-15, the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare aims to boost farm productivity through timely use of advanced machinery and financial support for farmers.
