Details

Assam is blessed with diverse flowering plants and a rich tradition of home gardens. However, commercial floriculture has not grown much. Neighboring states like West Bengal dominate Assam's flower market due to higher production and consistent supply. This mission seeks to change that by promoting high-value flower crops for better farmer income.

What Is This Scheme?

The Chief Minister Floriculture Mission is a government initiative launched to give a major push to the floriculture industry in Assam. It's designed to help farmers, women's self-help groups (SHGs), and unemployed youth get involved in growing and selling flowers. The mission focuses on modern cultivation techniques, providing necessary materials, and offering technical support.

Who Can Benefit From This Scheme?

This scheme is for individuals and groups who are interested in commercial flower cultivation. Specifically, it targets small and marginal farmers, women SHGs, and unemployed youth. Having your own land or leased land is important for participation.

Why This Scheme Is Important

Commercial floriculture offers higher returns compared to traditional crops. By promoting this sector, the mission aims to increase farmers' income, create employment opportunities, and reduce the reliance on imported flowers. It leverages Assam's natural potential for diverse flower species, including orchids.

Objective

Launched in 2014-15, this mission aims to comprehensively develop Assam's floriculture sector, covering cultivation, marketing, and training, with a special focus on Gerbera cultivation in shade nets.
