What is the age limit for applying for the National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF)?
The maximum age limit is 35 years at the time of submitting your application. However, candidates from SC/ST/OBC/Physically Challenged categories and women candidates get a relaxation of 5 years, making the upper age limit 40 years for them.
Can I continue my post-doctoral work at the same university where I completed my PhD?
Generally, you cannot avail the NPDF at the same institution where you obtained your PhD. Also, you cannot work under your PhD supervisor or co-supervisor as your mentor for this fellowship.
What is the duration of the N-PDF fellowship, and can it be extended?
The fellowship is initially for 2 years. In exceptional cases, if the research progress is satisfactory, it can be extended for one more year. However, the tenure cannot exceed three years under any circumstances.
How much is the fellowship amount, and is it taxable?
The monthly fellowship is ₹55,000/-. If you have submitted your thesis but haven't been awarded the degree yet, you will receive ₹35,000/- per month until the degree is awarded. Yes, the fellowship amount is subject to Indian income tax rules.

Can I work on another fellowship or a job while receiving the N-PDF?
No, fellows are not allowed to receive any other fellowship or salary from any government or non-government source during the tenure of the SERB National Post-Doctoral Fellowship.

Are there any specific rules regarding leave for NPDF fellows?
NPDF fellows are entitled to leave as per the host institution's rules. Attending scientific workshops, whether in India or abroad, is considered 'on duty'. Female candidates are also eligible for maternity leave according to Government of India guidelines.
Under what conditions can SERB terminate the NPDF fellowship?
