Details
The Indian government, through the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has introduced a valuable initiative called Margdarshan. This scheme aims to uplift the quality of technical education across the country.
The Margdarshan Initiative, started in 2018, acts as a support system for technical institutions. It helps them improve their overall quality, especially in the journey towards getting accredited. The core idea is to allow established and well-regarded institutes to mentor other, less developed ones, sharing their facilities and expertise.
The scheme has two main beneficiaries: Mentor Institutes (MIs) and Mentee Beneficiary Institutes (MBIs).
Mentor Institutes (MIs): These are established, AICTE-approved institutes or Central Government-funded institutions like IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc, ISERs, and IIMs. Their role is to guide up to 10 nearby institutes towards accreditation.
Mentee Beneficiary Institutes (MBIs): These are institutes that receive guidance from MIs. They get help with best practices, project proposals, outcome-based education, and other aspects crucial for improvement. Ideally, MBIs should be within about 200 km of their MI.
Margdarshan is crucial for fostering a culture of continuous improvement in technical education. By facilitating mentorship, it ensures that institutions can access valuable knowledge and resources they might otherwise lack. This leads to better-quality education, improved student outcomes, and a stronger foundation for technical professionals in India. The scheme also encourages institutions to focus on key areas like research, innovation, and industry collaboration.

For Mentor Institutes (MIs):
For Mentee Beneficiary Institutes (MBIs):
Interested institutes can apply by submitting an Application cum Detailed Project Report (DPR). The specific process and any required forms can be found through the official AICTE channels. The DPR should include details like:
Ensure all documents are enclosed as per the checklist provided by AICTE.
When applying for the Margdarshan scheme, institutes need to submit an Application cum Detailed Project Report (DPR) which includes several key documents and details. While a comprehensive list is available on the AICTE website, here are some of the essential components:
For the complete application cum detailed project report and latest guidelines, please refer to the official AICTE website:
What is the Margdarshan scheme all about?
The Margdarshan Initiative, introduced by AICTE in 2018, is designed to boost the quality of technical education. It helps institutes improve and get accredited by giving them access to facilities and expertise from established mentor institutes.
Who is responsible for managing this initiative?
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the governing body managing this scheme.
When did the Margdarshan scheme begin?
This scheme was first introduced in the year 2018.
What is the main goal of the Margdarshan initiative?
Its primary aim is to elevate the standard of technical education through accreditation, by letting institutes share facilities. It also focuses on spreading awareness about AICTE's initiatives and guiding institutions towards better NIRF rankings.
Can you explain what a 'Margdarshan Institute' is?
A Margdarshan Institute, or Mentor Institute (MI), is a well-established, AICTE-approved institution or a Central Funded Institute like IITs, NITs, etc. These institutes are chosen to mentor up to 10 other institutes and help them achieve accreditation.
What is a 'Mentee Beneficiary Institute (MBI)'?
A Mentee Beneficiary Institute (MBI) is an institute that receives guidance from an MI. The MI shares best practices, project proposal strategies, and advice on outcome-based education to help the MBI improve.
Which institutions are eligible to receive mentoring under this scheme?
Only institutes that are approved by AICTE can receive mentoring from MIs. Institutes approved by other bodies like PCI or CoA are not eligible.
What are the conditions for an institute to become a Mentor Institute (MI)?
An institution applying to be an MI must be approved by AICTE (unless it's a Central Funded Institution). If it's an AICTE-approved institute, it must have a valid accreditation for at least six months from the proposal submission date.
What is the maximum number of institutes an MI can mentor?
A Mentor Institute (MI) is allowed to mentor a maximum of 10 Mentee Beneficiary Institutes (MBIs).
How long is an MI's nomination valid?
An institute nominated as a Mentor Institute (MI) will have its nomination, along with the associated grant, for a period of three years.
What financial benefits do Mentor Institutes (MIs) receive?
The Council provides a token grant of ₹ 3,00,000/- per MBI mentored. This means an MI can receive up to ₹ 30,00,000/- in total for mentoring 10 MBIs under the Margdarshan Scheme.
What are the key advantages for Mentee Beneficiary Institutes (MBIs)?
MBIs can organize various activities at their institutes, with MIs providing resource persons. This includes workshops on accreditation, research, innovation, and guidance on curriculum and OBE implementation.
