Pune Porsche Crash: Teen Accused To Undergo Psychological Tests

In a recent development in Pune, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) has revisited its decision regarding a 17-year-old driver involved in a fatal accident that resulted in the deaths of two techies from Madhya Pradesh. Initially granted bail on May 19, the teenager's case saw a significant turn as Pune police requested a review. The board has now decided to form a committee under Section 15 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act. This committee is tasked with overseeing the juvenile's time at the observation home, including conducting psychological assessments and providing counselling.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (East) Manoj Patil detailed the board's plan, stating, "A committee will be set up to monitor the teenager at the observation home and carry out psychological tests and counselling." He further explained that this committee's findings would influence whether the teenager would undergo rehabilitation or face trial as an adult for his involvement in the tragic accident.

Monali Kale, the special assistant public prosecutor, highlighted the arguments for the juvenile's rehabilitation, pointing out his alcohol addiction and emphasizing the importance of his future prospects. "He can be referred to a psychiatrist for counselling as and when required," Kale mentioned, also noting the potential risks to the teenager's safety outside the observation home.

On the defense's side, lawyer Prashant Patil expressed intentions to consider further action following the JJB's detailed order, which was yet to be released at the time. "We opposed the police's plea to send the boy to an observation home. Now that the board has given its order, we will examine it and consult our client on moving an appeal before a higher court," he stated.

The teenager's bail conditions had sparked nationwide debate, especially the requirement to write a 300-word essay on the impact of road accidents and solutions. Additionally, he was to engage with an RTO officer to learn and practice traffic rules for 15 days and undergo de-addiction counselling and psychiatric consultation at Sassoon General Hospital. These efforts aimed at his rehabilitation and the safe integration into society, showcasing the complexities of handling juvenile offenses within the legal system.
