Pune Metro Line 3 Mulls Major Expansion: Loni Kalbhor, Additional Routes On The Table
The Pune Metro's Line 3 is currently being developed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) in partnership with the Tata group under a public-private partnership (PPP). Originally, Line 3 was planned to connect Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar. However, a new development plan has been proposed, suggesting an extension of Line 3 from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor.
Additionally, proposals have been made for the construction of the Hadapsar to Saswad road and the Race Course to Swargate metro lines, both spanning 23 kilometers. During a meeting, the Divisional Commissioner of Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA) directed that a single agency, either PMRDA or Maha Metro, should oversee the metro line extension. He recommended that PMRDA appoint a consultant to assess the feasibility of implementing the project through a PPP model.

Consequently, PMRDA engaged a consultancy to evaluate the economic viability of these routes. The consultancy submitted a project viability report to PMRDA, indicating that extending Line 3 from Shivajinagar to Loni Kalbhor, along with Pulgate to Swargate, is feasible on a PPP basis.
While the Metro line extension to Loni Kalbhor is in progress, the government has yet to decide whether PMRDA or Maha Metro will oversee the extension. The proposal will soon be forwarded to the state government for approval, following which the responsible authority for executing the extension will be determined.
