Goa Launches India's First Marine Conservation Vessel To Protect Marine Species
Goa is preparing to launch India's first dedicated marine conservation vessel, a landmark initiative to protect whale sharks, turtles, and other marine species. The announcement was made by Forest Minister Vishwajit Pratapsingh Rane on International Whale Shark Day.
Rane explained that the state is working to acquire a specialized offshore vessel equipped with modern facilities, making it the only ship in India exclusively devoted to marine conservation. He noted that procurement and operations will be guided by renowned conservationist Prof. B.C. Choudhury and other experts, calling the initiative a first-of-its-kind effort in the country.

To further strengthen conservation measures, the minister announced a reward program under which fishermen or individuals who rescue and release whale sharks and other endangered species listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, will receive ₹75,000 in compensation. Rane emphasized that the fishing community is Goa's greatest ally in these efforts, praising their commitment to protecting marine biodiversity. He also acknowledged the contributions of Francis Fernandes (Pele), who has played a pivotal role in educating fishermen and will continue guiding them in this mission.
A high-powered committee on marine life protection has also been constituted, headed by Prof. Choudhury and comprising experts including Vivek Menon, Praveen Kumar Raghaw, Shamila Monteiro, Francis Fernandes (Pele), and Rane. The panel will take strategic decisions to safeguard not just whale sharks, but all marine species along Goa's coast.
The event also marked the launch of the Whale Shark Conservation Project in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), the Goa Forest Department, the Department of Fisheries, and Oracle India.
Goa has already been at the forefront of marine conservation, deploying drones for real-time monitoring of its 105 km coastline to curb illegal fishing, introducing solar-electric boats such as MV LRAJ GREEN for eco-friendly water transport, and enforcing seasonal restrictions at Morjim and Galgibaga beaches to protect nesting Olive Ridley turtles.
With these integrated efforts-bringing together local communities, scientific expertise, and advanced technology-Goa aims to establish itself as the marine conservation capital of India and set a benchmark for sustainable biodiversity protection.
