Bihar’s Rural Roads to Be Pothole-Free by June 30
Bihar Government's Major Initiative for Rural Infrastructure Revamp.
In a significant step towards improving rural connectivity, the Bihar government has launched an ambitious initiative to make all rural roads across its 38 districts pothole-free by June 30, 2025. This project, spearheaded by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, aims to enhance accessibility in remote areas and accelerate economic development. The initiative also includes a long-term plan to complete all pending road construction projects in the 2025-26 financial year.

Key Highlights of the Initiative:
- Completion of the tendering process for all roads by March 2025.
- A strict deadline of June 30, 2025, to ensure pothole-free roads.
- Comprehensive road construction to be completed in the 2025-26 financial year.
- Special repair and maintenance programs to sustain road quality.
New Policy for Road Strengthening and Management
Under this initiative, Bihar's government will undertake the construction, reconstruction, upgrading, and renovation of rural roads that have surpassed their defect liability period. The project, named "Rural Road Strengthening and Management Program," was approved by the state cabinet on November 14, 2024.
To ensure transparency, all roads and bridges under the project will be mapped using geotagged photographs and detailed ground surveys via a dedicated mobile application. This digital tracking system will enable efficient project monitoring and execution.
Revamp of Rural Roads Across Bihar
The initiative will cover a total of 2,185 roads spanning 3,530.88 kilometers, with an estimated cost of ₹3,056.13 crore. Additionally, 13,436 roads across 38 districts, covering 23,938.54 kilometers, will be renovated at a cost of ₹20,322.41 crore. The government has instructed that the tender process for all approved roads be initiated immediately and completed by March 2025.
Ensuring Road Quality and Durability
To maintain long-term sustainability, the government has mandated biannual road resurfacing, extending their durability to at least seven years. Additionally, the project includes provisions for Rapid Road Repair Vehicles to facilitate quick repairs whenever required.
A key focus of this initiative is to ensure timely execution. The government has introduced a strict 21-day payment policy for contractors, ensuring smooth workflow and efficient project completion.
Five-Hour Connectivity from Remote Areas to Patna
One of the initiative's primary objectives is to ensure that every resident in Bihar's most remote locations can reach Patna within five hours. This will improve accessibility to healthcare, education, and business opportunities, significantly enhancing the quality of life in rural areas.
4182 Roads to Be Revamped in 2024-25
By the end of the 2024-25 financial year, nearly 4,182 roads spanning 7,300 kilometers will undergo maintenance and upgradation. These roads, which will exit the defect liability monitoring period by March 31, 2025, will be reconstructed under the budget allocations of the 2025-26 financial year.
This ambitious plan marks a milestone in Bihar's rural infrastructure development and is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity, enhance road safety, and drive economic growth in the state.
