The Indian Navy considers the new warship to be an important addition to its arsenal. "It can be used for power projection and ensure maritime security in the Indian Ocean region," said Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command.

The Navy said that the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant will be able to deploy 30 aircraft including indigenously developed Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) along with MiG-29K fighter jets and helicopters.

By building an indigenous aircraft carrier, India joins a select group of countries like the US, UK, Russia, China and France, which are the only countries that have designed and built their own aircraft carriers.

Built at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore, it was designed by the Naval Warship Design Bureau and built by public sector manufacturer Cochin Shipyard Limited.

INS Vikrant played an important role during the 1971 war against Pakistan for the liberation of Bangladesh. Largest warship built in India. The same name was given to the vessel now built.
