Bihar Election Twist: Meira Kumar fighting against niece

Patna, March 19: It will be aunty versus niece fight this Lok Sabha election from Sasaram (SC) seat in Bihar. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is contesting against her niece Medhavi Kirti, who will be contesting on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket.

Bihar BJP President Bharat Bind informed that Kirti joined the BSP in New Delhi in the presence of party chief Mayawati. Kirti is the grand daughter of former Congress leader Jagjivan Ram.

Meanwhile, Meira Kumar on Wednesday, March 19 filed her nomination papers for the Lok Sabha polls from the Sasaram constituency which has been her bastion for two terms since the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

After filing her nomination paper, Meira Kumar was quoted as saying, "I am confident and sure that people will support and vote for me. I will again win from here."

A former IFS officer, Meira Kumar is the sitting Congress member of parliament from Sasaram. Bihar's ruling JD-U has fielded KP Ramiah, a retired IAS officer, against her, while the BJP has fielded former minister Chedi Paswan for the seat.

In the last Lok Sabha polls in 2009, the Congress won only two of 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, including that of Sasaram.
