Shifting Paradigms: Interviews in 2024 Versus a Decade Ago

Candidates are tasked with a digital marketing analysis during a virtual interview and demonstrate live over Zoom. They are expected to create a sophisticated pivot table on Google Sheets or Excel, all while explaining the methodology to the interviewer. A few of them successfully navigate through the spreadsheet, carefully selecting and organizing the data to meet the specific requirements. They process the data, create calculated fields, group data, and arrange the layout to achieve the desired outcome. At the same time, the skilled ones also articulate the rationale for their actions and decision-making, demonstrating a clear understanding of pivot table functionality and data analysis techniques. However, most others are already out of contention after failed attempts to complete the task, making the recruiter's job of selecting worthy candidates easy. Welcome to the modern-day interview setting.

Now, let's go back a decade when candidates would prepare scripted responses and carefully curated personas, leaving little room for genuine connection or authentic representation.

Mr Varun Satia

Fast forward to 2024, and the interview landscape has transformed. While most of the questions might still be the same, job roles today require the core ability to impact and convince, solve problems, learn with agility, etc. Organizations are looking for job-ready talent that can hit the ground running. Therefore, their questions are more pointed and precise, leaving little room for curated responses to work.

Impact of technological changes

Both employers and candidates now rely heavily on technology throughout the hiring process, from initial research to final execution. Employers use advanced software to assess candidates' digital profiles and capabilities even before the interview, shaping their first impressions. Meanwhile, the candidates leverage technology to plan, prepare, and present themselves confidently. Virtual platforms and career-focused creators offer valuable insights and strategies for interview success. AI-powered tools provide personalized feedback and coaching, making interview preparation more accessible and effective than ever.

Here are 3 things to consider to do well in an interview:

Understanding the Core Interviewer tension

Remember, an interview is not an exam; it is akin to a sales exercise. Understanding what the interviewer is looking for and delivering tailored solutions is essential for making a lasting impression. By uncovering the underlying tensions driving each question, candidates can showcase their strengths, empathy, and problem-solving abilities.

Imagine you are in an interview, and the interviewer asks, "Tell me about yourself." Most students think as follows. "Answer should be about a minute long and should also include a few things that are not in my CV. So, I will start with my name, my hometown, and a little about my family. Then I will talk about my best accomplishments from college, positions of responsibility, internship details, etc. Then, I will talk a little about my personality and how working in this role and company is perfectly aligned to what I want to do in my career."

This response is not going to work. It is imperative to understand the core interviewer tension (CIT) behind this question. They want to know if there is enough potential in the candidate, making it worthwhile to probe further. The response to this question would therefore need to demonstrate your strengths and include energy and impact, while making the interviewer interested enough to want to spend more time with you.

Another question one might be asked is, "Tell me about a time when you had to manage a conflict." The CIT around this question is whether a person can manage disagreements in the team with empathy or if they respond badly, either by being silent or (metaphorically) violent.
You should therefore talk about a genuine disagreement in a professional set-up, showcasing how you were empathetic to the other person's point of view, ideally at that point. If not at that point, then reflectively now, how you would have handled the situation had it happened now.

Dissect and absorb the job description

Breaking down the JD to the core competencies and prepare on what aligns the most with your strengths and try and direct the interview conversation in that direction. It is important to show that you have a proactive approach, which will only be possible when you truly understand the JD.

Don't lie at all

During interviews, honesty is non-negotiable. Lying rarely goes unnoticed by competent interviewers, who dig deep for authenticity. Be authentic while presenting your experiences. Package the truth thoughtfully, highlighting your strengths and achievements, while presenting reflections of areas where you haven't done as well.

The role of edtech platforms
