What is a penumbral lunar eclipse?

A penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes into the lighter outer region of the Earth's shadow, called the Penumbra. During the process, the Earth appears to cover part of the Sun's disk but not all of it.

A penumbral lunar eclipse is hard to witness due to the subtle dimming effect. If the weather conditions remain clear, the Indian cities will get a chance to witness the first Chandra Grahan of 2023.
