Rajiv Gandhi assassination: SC to decide on death penalty commutation

Rajiv Gandhi killers may get a breather
New Delhi, Jan 29: The Supreme Court is most likely to decide on the death sentence commutation of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case today.

The convicts' mercy petitions have been delayed for long.

Recently the Supreme Court announced a judgement that the death sentences can be commuted if there was a delay in deciding on the mercy peitions of convicts.

Three convicts- Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan are hopeful that the SC will decide after taking in account of their delayed mercy petition. Their mercy petitions were rejected after 11 years. Meanwhile along with these three, Nalini was also given capital punishment but her death penalty was commuted to life imprisonment by the TN governor in 2000.

Rajiv Gandhi was assasinated by a suicide bomber on May 21, 1991.
