New Delhi Railway Station To Be Renamed? BJP MP Requests Railways Minister

Delhi MP Praveen Khandelwal has reached out to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He has proposed renaming New Delhi Railway Station to "Atal Bihari Vajpayee Railway Station." Khandelwal views this as a meaningful gesture to honour the memory of Bharat Ratna and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the heart of India's capital.

Khandelwal also suggested changing the name of Old Delhi Railway Station (Delhi Junction) to "Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station." He highlighted its historical and cultural importance. Delhi's Mayor, Rekha Gupta, had previously backed this idea and plans to discuss it with the Railway Minister and in Parliament.

Symbolic Importance of New Delhi Railway Station

In his letter, Khandelwal pointed out that New Delhi Railway Station is among India's busiest and most significant stations. It acts as a symbolic entry point to the capital. Renaming it after Atal Bihari Vajpayee would pay tribute to one of India's esteemed leaders and resonate with both Delhi's citizens and the nation.

Khandelwal praised Vajpayee for his dedication to national service, democratic principles, and inclusive growth. He emphasised Vajpayee's influence on India's infrastructure, nuclear capabilities, global standing, and economic reforms. According to Khandelwal, Vajpayee was not only a statesman but also a poet, thinker, and an inspirational figure.

Cultural Significance and Historical Comparisons

Praveen Khandelwal drew comparisons with other notable stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai and Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna Station in Bengaluru. He argued that Delhi deserves a central station named after a national icon too. Such renaming would be both a tribute and an inspiration for future generations.
