List of Chief Ministers of Delhi: Congress vs BJP vs AAP Leadership
Delhi has witnessed dynamic political shifts over the years, with leaders from different parties shaping the capital's governance. Since 1993, when Delhi gained partial statehood, several Chief Ministers have held office, leading the city through various challenges and developments. Here's a look at all the Chief Ministers of Delhi and their tenure durations.
1. Madan Lal Khurana (1993-1996) - BJP

Madan Lal Khurana became Delhi's first Chief Minister after the 1993 assembly elections. Representing the Moti Nagar constituency, he served for 2 years and 86 days before stepping down due to internal party politics.
2. Sahib Singh Verma (1996-1998) - BJP
Taking over from Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma served as Delhi's Chief Minister from the Shalimar Bagh constituency for 2 years and 228 days. His tenure saw efforts to improve infrastructure, but internal party struggles led to his replacement.
3. Sushma Swaraj (1998) - BJP
A prominent national leader, Sushma Swaraj briefly served as Delhi's Chief Minister for just 52 days in 1998. Despite her efforts, the BJP lost the subsequent elections to the Congress.
4. Sheila Dikshit (1998-2013) - Congress
Sheila Dikshit holds the record as Delhi's longest-serving Chief Minister, leading the city for 15 consecutive years across three terms (1998, 2003, and 2008). Representing the New Delhi constituency, she focused on urban development, metro expansion, and infrastructure projects.
5. Arvind Kejriwal (2013, 2015-2024) - AAP
In 2013, Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), became Delhi's seventh Chief Minister. However, his tenure lasted only 48 days as he resigned after being unable to table the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly.
Delhi was placed under President's Rule for a year from 2014 to 2015, marking the only such instance in its political history.
Following the 2015 elections, Kejriwal returned to power and served as Chief Minister for 9 years and 218 days. Currently, Atishi holds the position as the incumbent Chief Minister of Delhi.
6. Atishi Marlena (2024-Present) - AAP
Atishi Marlena, a senior AAP leader, took over as Delhi's Chief Minister in 2024, representing Kalkaji. As of February 2025, she has completed 140 days in office. Her leadership is expected to shape the next phase of Delhi's political landscape.
Delhi's political history reflects the shifts in public sentiment and governance priorities. From Sheila Dikshit's long rule to Kejriwal's policy-driven leadership, and now Atishi's tenure, each leader has left a mark on the city's development.
Let's take a look at the political history of the national capital and the influential leaders who have served as its Chief Minister.
