Justice Yashwant Varma Recommended For Return To Allahabad High Court
The Supreme Court Collegium has formally recommended the repatriation of Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court, according to an official statement released after meetings held on March 20th and 24th, 2025.
Justice Varma, who was the second senior-most judge at the Delhi High Court, headed a division bench that handled complex legal matters including sales tax cases, goods and services tax litigation, company appeals, and various original side appeals.

The recommendation was made by the Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice AS Oka. Their statement explicitly confirmed the decision to transfer Justice Varma back to the Allahabad High Court.
This transfer appears to be part of the judiciary's broader strategy to optimize judicial resources across India's high courts. Such reassignments aim to balance caseloads and enhance the overall efficiency of the legal system throughout the country.
Justice Varma's extensive experience and expertise in managing complex tax and corporate legal matters made him a valuable asset to the Delhi High Court. His return to Allahabad marks a significant shift in his judicial career while potentially strengthening the judicial capacity of the Allahabad High Court.
