Jeevan Raksha Yojana: Congress Promises Rs 25 Lakh Health Insurance Cover Ahead Of Delhi Polls 2025
For the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections 2025, Congress on Wednesday introduced 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana' as a poll promise, which will provide a health insurance cover of Rs 25 lakh if the grand old party gets elected. Congress' initiative follows their earlier scheme, 'Pyaari Didi Yojana', which pledged Rs 2500 monthly to women in Delhi. Both schemes will be prioritised if Congress comes to power.
During the launch event, Ashok Gehlot, former Rajasthan Chief Minister, stated that the 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana' would be included in the party's manifesto. "Delhi Congress has decided to include the 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana' in its manifesto for the upcoming elections. Under this scheme, health insurance coverage of up to Rs 25 lakh will be provided. A similar initiative was launched in Rajasthan, offering free treatment up to Rs 25 lakh for all residents, with no mandatory conditions or restrictions, ensuring inclusivity," he explained.

Delhi Assembly Election 2025
The Election Commission of India announced on January 7 that Delhi's Assembly elections will occur on February 5, with results declared on February 8. The Model Code of Conduct is now active in the capital. Key dates include January 10 for Gazette notification issuance and January 17 as the last date for filing nominations.
Devendra Yadav, Congress election in-charge, acknowledged past mistakes with Aam Aadmi Party alliances and vowed not to repeat them. "We admit that the agreement made with Aam Aadmi Party in the Lok Sabha elections was a big mistake, we will not repeat the mistake. The people of Delhi, due to your anti-incumbency, are now placing their trust in the Congress," he said.
Rs 25 Lakh Health Insurance for All
Gehlot compared 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana' to Rajasthan's Chiranjeevi Yojana and highlighted its potential impact on Delhi. He noted that Rajasthan's 'Right to Health' Act granted public rights implemented across hospitals. "This was a revolutionary scheme in Rajasthan. I am happy that I was called here to launch the Jeevan Raksha Yojana. Jeevan Raksha Yojana will be a game changer scheme for Delhi and we have to spread its information to the public," Gehlot added.
The Congress campaign slogan "Hogi Har Zarurat Puri, Congress Hai Zaroori" emphasises their commitment to providing essential services. This message was prominently displayed during the announcement of their new schemes.
What Happened in 2020?
In Delhi's 2020 Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won decisively with 62 out of 70 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured eight seats while Congress did not win any. Voter turnout was recorded at 62.82%, a decrease from previous years.
AAP received over half of all valid votes polled at 53.57%, while BJP garnered around 38.51%. These figures highlight AAP's strong presence and influence during those elections.
The Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar outlined key dates: scrutiny of nominations on January 18 and withdrawal deadline on January 20. The entire election process is expected to conclude by February 10.
