Building Collapse In Southeast Delhi Due To Heavy Rainfall Results In Seven Fatalities

Heavy rainfall led to a tragic incident in Southeast Delhi's Hari Nagar village, Jaitpur, where a building wall collapsed onto several jhuggis. This unfortunate event resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including two children. The collapse occurred on a Saturday morning, and one person sustained injuries.

Police received an emergency call about the collapse at 9:15 am. Local officers were quick to respond and managed to rescue eight people from the debris. These individuals were then taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Trauma Centre for medical attention. Among those rescued were four men, two women, and two children.

Rescue Efforts and Casualties

DCP (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari stated that local police arrived at the scene between 9:20 and 9:22 am. They arranged for earthmover machines to clear the debris and facilitate rescue operations. Unfortunately, seven of the eight rescued individuals did not survive.

The deceased have been identified as Baby Ruksana (7), Baby Hasina (7), Ravibul (27), Rubina (25), Safiqul (27), Muttus (50), and Doli (28). The sole survivor, Hasibul (25), is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital.

Causes and Immediate Actions

Additional DCP (Southeast) Aishwarya Sharma explained that heavy overnight rain caused waterlogging in the area, weakening the wall next to an old temple. This led to its collapse onto nearby shacks where kabadiwalas resided. After rescue operations concluded, authorities evacuated the remaining jhuggi area to ensure no one else was trapped under the debris.

This incident follows similar tragedies in Delhi due to heavy rains. On July 29, a boundary wall collapse in North Delhi's Civil Lines claimed two lives and critically injured two others. The victims were labourers from Madhya Pradesh working at a construction site.

Previous Incidents

Earlier on July 12, another devastating event occurred when a four-storey building collapsed in Janta Colony near Idgah Road in Northeast Delhi's Welcome area. Seven family members perished in this tragedy, including a two-year-old girl. Residents were reportedly asleep when three floors of the building gave way.

The recent incidents highlight ongoing concerns about building safety during monsoon seasons in Delhi. Authorities continue to investigate these collapses to prevent future occurrences and ensure public safety.
