From Reel To Real: Delhi Model, Lover Get Lifer For Plotting Wife’s Murder In Gruesome Love Triangle

A 26-year-old model who once starred in films exploring themes of romance, betrayal, and murder found fiction bleeding into reality when she plotted the killing of her lover's wife in 2018.

Angel Gupta and her partner Manjeet Singh, 38, were among six individuals convicted for the murder of Singh's wife, Sunita, who was fatally shot in October 2018.

The pair have been sentenced to life imprisonment for orchestrating the contract killing - a grim conclusion to a relationship that started by chance and spiralled into a calculated crime.

Fatal Attraction

Angel Gupta was originally named Shashiprabha. She adopted the name "Angel" in pursuit of stardom. After a brief stint in low-budget films, music videos, and magazine shoots, she abandoned Mumbai's film world and relocated to Delhi.

It was there that she met Manjeet, a property dealer. According to a Times of India report, their paths crossed outside a Gurugram nightclub, where Angel was being harassed by two men. Manjeet intervened and rescued her, earning her admiration - and soon after, her affection.

However, Angel later discovered that Manjeet was already married to Sunita, a schoolteacher from Haryana, with whom he shared a 16-year-old daughter. Despite this, their relationship deepened, causing significant strain in Manjeet's marriage as he divided his time between his family and Angel.

Angel's father, Rajeev - a well-off industrialist - reportedly gave Manjeet an ultimatum: choose between his daughter or his wife and child. This confrontation allegedly triggered the sinister plot to eliminate Sunita.

Chilling Plot

The couple allegedly enlisted Rajeev's driver to help find contract killers, promising a payment of ₹10 lakh. While Manjeet provided information on his wife's daily routine, Rajeev and another man, Deepak, conducted reconnaissance on the routes Sunita frequented.

Their first attempt to carry out the murder, which coincided with the Karva Chauth festival, failed - the hired gunmen became distracted while eating samosas at a roadside stall. Four days later, however, they succeeded in shooting Sunita dead on a street in Bawana.

Police ruled out robbery as a motive, as Sunita's handbag and mobile phone were untouched. Investigators found her personal diary during a search of the family home, which documented her troubled marriage and Manjeet's extramarital affair with Angel.

Confronted with inconsistencies in his statements, Manjeet eventually confessed to the crime. On 29 April, Delhi's Rohini Court found Angel, Manjeet, Rajeev, Deepak, and shooters Vishal and Shehzad guilty of conspiracy and murder.

Days later, the court handed down life sentences to the couple, marking the grim conclusion of their ill-fated affair.
