Electricity Prices To Go Up In Delhi: Minister Ashish Sood

In a significant announcement that could impact thousands of Delhi residents, Power Minister Ashish Sood has indicated that electricity rates in the capital may soon increase. This potential hike stems from a massive Rs 27,000 crore debt reportedly accumulated during the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's tenure, which now falls on power distribution companies (Discoms) to manage.

The financial burden, channeled through the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), necessitates tariff revisions for recovery. Sood revealed this information while responding to AAP MLA Imran Hussain's inquiry about expected changes in electricity pricing during a Delhi Assembly session.

Electricity Prices To Shoot in Delhi

According to Sood, the fiscal challenge originates from regulatory assets left behind by the former administration. He pointed out that despite a Delhi High Court directive instructing DERC to implement a tariff order, the previous government failed to act, allegedly neglecting public interest. "That government could not protect the interests of the public. In the coming time, electricity prices will rise, and perhaps some people even want this for their political gains," Sood remarked, while assuring that his government maintains communication with DERC and is monitoring developments closely.

Policy Shift: Free Electricity vs Financial Sustainability

This impending increase marks a stark contrast between the AAP's popular free electricity scheme and the BJP's current approach focusing on financial sustainability. Under AAP's governance, Delhi residents enjoyed subsidized electricity with free power up to 200 units and a 50% subsidy for consumption between 201-400 units. This policy was one of AAP's flagship initiatives that helped secure their electoral success in previous elections.

The BJP government appears to be pivoting toward addressing the financial realities of power distribution rather than continuing with subsidies that, according to them, contributed to the current debt crisis. This shift represents a fundamental difference in governance philosophy: AAP's welfare-centric approach that prioritized free services versus BJP's emphasis on fiscal responsibility and cost recovery.

Political Crossfire

Meanwhile, former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi has criticized the BJP-led central government for allegedly failing to fulfill its pre-election promise of disbursing Rs 2,500 to women by March 8. With the budget session currently underway, Atishi expressed skepticism about the BJP honoring its commitments. "The BJP made a lot of promises before the elections. We hope that those promises are fulfilled in this budget session... It is clear that PM Modi lied and betrayed the people of Delhi," she asserted.

As Delhi prepares for intensive budget discussions, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta participated in the traditional preparation of 'Kheer,' symbolically inaugurating deliberations in the newly elected Delhi Legislative Assembly government. This ceremonial gesture marks the beginning of a session focused on electoral promise fulfillment and managing the city's financial health.

The contrasting approaches to electricity pricing highlight the fundamental ideological differences between the two parties' governance models, with Delhi residents now waiting to see how the BJP government will balance financial recovery with public welfare concerns.
