Liquor sales are a significant source of revenue for Delhi, with the state collecting more than Rs 5,000 crore in taxes from alcohol sales in the 2024-25 fiscal year. The city sold nearly 6 lakh litres of alcohol per day in the previous fiscal year, amounting to 21.27 crore litres in total.
In addition to the tax revenue, the Delhi government's handling of the liquor policy has been a subject of controversy. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, faced allegations related to a liquor policy scam, which became a prominent issue in the 2025 Delhi elections. Despite these challenges, the sale of alcohol remains a crucial part of the city's economy, contributing significantly to its financial resources.
