Delhi rain forecast after heatwave and temperature drop

The change follows several days when maximum temperatures in parts of Delhi crossed 45 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, the city recorded below-normal daytime temperatures at major stations, according to IMD data. The cooler conditions came after strong winds and light rain swept several areas during the evening, offering relief from the prolonged heat.

Safdarjung, considered Delhi’s base weather station, registered a maximum temperature of 41.1 degrees Celsius. This was 0.7 degrees below normal and 3.2 degrees lower than the previous day. The minimum temperature at Safdarjung was 28.4 degrees Celsius, which stood 1.8 degrees above normal and 2.2 degrees higher than the previous day’s minimum.

Delhi rain forecast, wind speeds and station-wise rainfall

Thunderstorms in the national capital on Thursday produced varied wind speeds across different locations. The highest gust, 61 kmph, was recorded at Palam. IMD figures issued at 9 pm showed winds of 52 kmph at Pusa, while Safdarjung and Pitampura logged gusts of 37 kmph each. Jafarpur reported 35 kmph, and Mayur Vihar and Janakpuri saw 31 kmph.

Rainfall amounts between 5.30 pm and 8.30 pm on Thursday also differed from station to station. Safdarjung recorded 3.3 mm of rain and Palam measured 3.1 mm. Pitampura, Mayur Vihar and Jafarpur each saw 0.5 mm during the same period, indicating scattered but measurable showers across the city, IMD data showed.

Private forecaster Skymet Weather expects storm activity over Delhi to continue in the short term. "Thunderstorm activity has already begun over northern parts of Rajasthan and is expected to spread to Delhi by evening and continue through the night," said Mahesh Palawat, Skymet Weather. Palawat said the storm intensity is likely to increase on Friday, with the spell persisting till May 30.

Palawat added that the system is likely to move towards Gujarat between May 30 and 31 after affecting Delhi. "The current spell of pre-monsoon rains is likely to be stronger than the pre-monsoon showers witnessed in Delhi earlier this month and in April, leading to widespread rainfall activity across the city," Palawat said. The activity is linked to a western disturbance over the hills, an induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and nearby areas, and humid winds from the Bay of Bengal that have raised moisture over Delhi.
