Delhi Weather Forecast, 29th May: 49°C Heatwaves And Thunderstorms

According to the India Meteorological Department's Regional Centre in Delhi, today there is a heatwave red alert for several parts of Delhi. North Delhi especially is going to be hit with severe heatwaves but afterwards, thunderstorms and light rain will help cool off the temperature in the coming days.

Areas In Delhi With Severe Heatwaves Today And Tomorrow:

Many of the northern parts of Delhi are going to be experiencing severe heatwaves that reach temperatures between 47°C to 49°C. These temperatures will last for both today and tomorrow. The areas that the severe heatwaves will hit include Jafarpur, Mungeshpur, Najafgarh, Narela, Delhi Ridge, Pitampura, and Pusa.

Ayanagar, in the southern area of Delhi, will also experience temperatures up to 48°C today.

Forecast For The Next Week:

The rest of Delhi will still be experiencing regular heatwaves with temperatures between 45°C to 46°C for the next today and tomorrow. Afterwards, between 31 May and 1 June, there are expectations of cloudy skies, thunderstorms and dust storms, with very light drizzle. These will help cool off the temperature a bit but may cause other disturbances that readers may want to be vary of during those days.

From 2 June onwards, there are no warnings, as the weather that's been forecast only predicts cloudy skies, accompanied by gusty winds with speeds between 25 km/h to 40 km/h.

The minimum temperature for the days in this week will fluctuate between 28°C and 32°C.

IMD and NDMA Give Advice For Severe Heatwaves:

While the rest of the week doesn't have any red alerts, today may be a harsh day for people who are exposed to the sun a lot, or have a vulnerable immune system like children, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases.

IMD has given the following advice to combat the heat:

1) Avoid heat exposure - keep cool.
2) Avoid dehydration.
3) Drink sufficient water - even if not thirsty.
4) Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc. to keep yourself hydrated.

The National Disaster Management Authority of India have also given their own 'Do's and Don'ts' which added on:

5) Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrates the body.
6) Avoid high-protein food and do not eat stale food.
