Delhi Water Supply Cut Alert: Areas Affected Until November 1, Delhi Jal Board Shares Full List
The Delhi Jal Board has announced a water supply disruption affecting various parts of the national capital until November 1, caused by elevated ammonia levels in the Yamuna River. Areas impacted include parts of East, Northeast, and South Delhi, as well as regions under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

Cause of the Disruption
The board explained that the primary water sources for Delhi's Bhagirathi Water Treatment Plant (WTP), with a capacity of 110 million gallons per day, and the Sonia Vihar WTP, which processes 140 million gallons per day, are from the Upper Ganga Canal in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh. Scheduled annual maintenance of the Upper Ganga Canal by the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department is underway from October 12 to 31, leading to the closure of the canal since midnight on October 12.

Due to maintenance on the Upper Ganga Canal, Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar WTPs are operating at 30% capacity, relying temporarily on the Yamuna. Water supply may be affected till November 1, 2024 in following areas. We regret the inconvenience. #DJB #ALERT #UPDATE pic.twitter.com/lJpk8LgpKO
During this maintenance period, the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department and UP Jal Nigam are performing necessary repairs, including desilting and maintenance of barrages and regulators, as well as work on setting tanks and conduits at Muradnagar. Consequently, the supply of Ganga water to these treatment plants has been halted.
With this interruption, the WTPs are now relying on the Yamuna River as an alternative water source until October 31. However, the high ammonia content in the Yamuna, exceeding 1.5 parts per million (ppm), is complicating the treatment process.
As a result, the production capacity at Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar has been reduced by up to 30%. The output will continue to fluctuate based on the quality of the raw water sourced from the Yamuna.
