Delhi Water Crisis Amid Heatwave: AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar Leads ‘Matka Phod’ Protest, Blames BJP for Shortage

Amid a fierce heatwave and soaring temperatures, a sharp political clash erupted in Delhi over the growing water shortage. Residents of East Delhi’s Kondli constituency, led by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kuldeep Kumar, staged a large and heated 'matka phod’ protest outside the Delhi Jal Board office in Mayur Vihar Phase-2.

Protesters carried empty earthen pots and placards criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party government while raising loud slogans against the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor. The demonstration highlighted long queues for water in several neighbourhoods and accused authorities of ignoring repeated complaints from families facing very limited supply for basic daily use.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Kuldeep Kumar launched an attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, blaming the party for what was described as a manufactured water crisis. Kuldeep Kumar said, "The BJP calls itself a 'four-engine' government, but the reality is that it has turned out to be completely useless. In this terrible heat, people in Kondli constituency and East Delhi are craving every single drop of water. Because the BJP government in Haryana is blocking Delhi’s rightful share of water, there is chaos in the capital. The BJP is taking revenge on the people of Delhi for its electoral defeat."

Kuldeep Kumar linked the water scarcity directly to alleged obstruction by Haryana, saying that the withholding of supply had pushed several colonies into distress. The MLA argued that areas in East Delhi, especially Kondli, had seen frequent dry taps, forcing residents to depend on tankers. The speech drew strong responses from the crowd, which repeated slogans blaming the BJP leadership.

The MLA also issued a firm warning to Delhi Jal Board officials present at the Mayur Vihar Phase-2 office. Kuldeep Kumar stated that if regular water supply was not restored within 48 hours across different blocks and colonies of Kondli constituency, the agitation would grow more aggressive. The protest, according to Kuldeep Kumar, would continue until residents received consistent and adequate water.

Later, Kuldeep Kumar turned to social media platform X, where local BJP leaders were criticised over the prolonged water crisis. The MLA announced that, if there was no early solution, Kondli residents would join an indefinite gherao of BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma’s residence. Kuldeep Kumar said the entire responsibility for any such escalation would rest with the administration.

The protest led by Kuldeep Kumar placed the Delhi water crisis firmly at the centre of an ongoing political dispute between AAP and BJP. With temperatures still high and supply worries persistent in Kondli and East Delhi, residents awaited action on the MLA’s 48-hour deadline while tensions between rival political leaders continued to rise.
