Delhi Pollution: Govt Brings Back GRAP-3, Limits Construction And Mining Activities
The central government invoked Stage-3 restrictions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR due to declining air quality, leading to a ban on non-essential construction work. Additionally, state governments in the region are considering halting physical classes.
Further measures include restrictions on certain vehicles-BS III petrol and BS IV diesel 4-wheelers-in specific areas like Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Budh Nagar.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) attributed Delhi's deteriorating air quality to adverse meteorological conditions, such as fog, haze, and low wind speed. At various times, the Air Quality Index (AQI) persisted in the 'very poor' to 'severe' categories.
Under GRAP directives, non-essential construction, stone crushing, and mining are restricted in Delhi-NCR. However, exceptions exist for projects related to national security, healthcare, transportation, and critical infrastructure.
The India Meteorological Department reported normal winter temperatures in Delhi and predicted light rainfall with shallow to moderate fog throughout the day. AQI values categorize the air quality from 'good' to 'severe,' with forecasts indicating Delhi's air quality will likely stay 'very poor' for several days.
Data analysis showcased varied contributors to pollution, with vehicles, biomass burning, and waste burning playing significant roles. Forecasts suggest Delhi's air quality will remain between 'very poor' and 'poor' in the coming days, as per the Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
