Delhi Polls: Parties Woo Women Voters with Cash Pledges

In the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Indian National Congress have all outlined plans to attract female voters by offering financial assistance. With women making up 46.2% of Delhi's electorate, these proposals highlight the parties' strategies to gain support from this significant voter base. Notably, the BJP has introduced a proposal to provide ₹2,500 monthly to women, while AAP's Mahila Samman Yojana promises ₹2,100 per month. Similarly, the Congress party has announced its 'Pyari Didi Yojana,' promising a monthly payment of ₹2,500 to women if victorious, echoing its initiatives in other states.

Delhi's electoral office disclosed that as of January 6, there are 1,55,24,858 registered voters, with women voters numbering 71,73,952. This demographic shift is notable, especially as nearly 70 percent of the 5.1 lakh new voter registration applications received between December 16 and January 6 were from women. This surge in female voter registration demonstrates the impact of the financial aid promises made by the major political parties.

The plans for direct cash transfers to women have sparked a varied response among Delhi's female population. Some view these promises as a positive step towards addressing their financial needs, while others remain skeptical about the promises' sustainability and actual implementation post-election. Nisha Verma, a homemaker, sees potential benefits for her family in these schemes but questions their longevity. In contrast, Priya Sharma, a professional, calls for more impactful solutions that address broader issues like employment and safety for women. Rukhsar Ansari and Asha Kumari, both benefiting from the potential financial aid, stress the importance of remembering women's needs beyond election seasons and seek improvements in education and healthcare as well.

Geeta Devi, a senior citizen, underscores the significance of these financial aid schemes for women's financial independence but expresses concern over the potential reduction of other benefits to fund these payments. These varied perspectives underscore the complexity of women voters' needs and priorities, indicating that while financial assistance is welcomed, there is a clear demand for more comprehensive systemic changes.
