Delhi Polls: Is Arvind Kejriwal Betting Too Much on Freebies?

In the lead-up to the upcoming election season in New Delhi, the political landscape buzzes with discussions about the implementation of welfare schemes and financial aids. Former Chief Minister of Delhi and AAP leader, Arvind Kejriwal, has put forward a proposition that aims to increase the monthly financial support for women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,100, provided AAP secures a win in the forthcoming elections. Kejriwal emphasized the significance of this initiative by stating, "Every woman in Delhi will get direct monthly financial assistance from now on. For the Delhi government, this is a blessing rather than an expense. The blessings of our mothers and sisters will bring prosperity."

Another initiative that AAP hopes will garner support is the 'Sanjivni Yojna', designed to offer free healthcare to individuals over the age of 60. Kejriwal revealed plans to commence registration for this scheme in the next couple of days, with AAP volunteers set to organize door-to-door campaigns to enroll eligible elderly citizens. He assured that the scheme's implementation would follow post-elections, demonstrating AAP's commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility for senior residents of Delhi.

Criticism, however, arises from the opposition, with the BJP accusing AAP of adopting a "populist" approach at the expense of the state's fiscal resources. The BJP's critique extends to what they label as AAP's "revadi" culture, a term echoed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his indictment of Kejriwal's policy of distributing "freebies" for electoral advantage. This critique is further compounded by the Delhi High Court's recent censure of AAP for not adopting the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in Delhi, a scheme that offers up to Rs 5 lakh in healthcare coverage to protect against the costs of significant medical care.

Kejriwal is also reaching out to a key demographic of AAP supporters – the autorickshaw drivers of Delhi. In a strategic move to consolidate their support, he announced a comprehensive welfare package for them. This package includes life and accident insurance worth Rs 15 lakh, a Rs 1 lakh financial aid for their daughters' weddings, a Rs 2,500 uniform allowance biannually, and free coaching classes for their children. Kejriwal aims to further integrate autorickshaws into the PoochhO app, enhancing their business prospects through this ride-hailing service. He urged drivers to extend their support to him once more, highlighting the mutual benefits of this proposal.

The Delhi government, under AAP's administration, has been known for its focus on welfare schemes, including the provision of free electricity up to 200 units and free water supply – pivotal promises that played a significant role in AAP's ascendancy in Delhi. The budget for this year earmarks substantial funds for subsidies and amenities, with Rs 250 crore allocated for free electricity and the Mahila Samman Yojana receiving Rs 2,000 crore. The overall allocation for various "freebie" schemes stands at approximately Rs 6,327.75 crore, constituting about 8.3% of the total Rs 76,000 crore budget, marking an uptick from last year's nearly 5% allocation.
