Delhi Polls: AAP Govt Launches ‘Mahila Samman Yojana’ With ₹1000 Monthly Assistance for Women
On Thursday, Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), made a significant announcement regarding the approval of the Mahila Samman Yojana by the Delhi cabinet. This new scheme is set to empower women in the national capital by providing them with a monthly financial aid of ₹1,000. This move comes as the city gears up for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, anticipated to take place in February next year. While the Election Commission of India has yet to declare the exact dates, the current assembly's tenure in Delhi is due to conclude on February 23, 2025.
The AAP, under Kejriwal's leadership, is aiming for a hat-trick of electoral victories in Delhi, following its remarkable performances in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections. The party secured an overwhelming majority by winning 67 seats in 2015 and 63 seats in 2020, out of the total 70 seats.

With the introduction of the Mahila Samman Yojana, the government demonstrates its continued focus on women's welfare and empowerment, echoing its previous commitment as outlined in the 2024-25 budget announcement. This earlier announcement introduced the 'Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana,' promising ₹1,000 monthly assistance to eligible women and allocated a budget of ₹2,000 crore for its implementation.
However, the scheme's progress encountered hurdles due to budgetary constraints raised by the Finance department, indicating a potential bureaucratic slowdown. Despite these challenges, the AAP government's decision to approve the Mahila Samman Yojana reflects its dedication to supporting women in the capital.
This development is part of the broader narrative of the AAP's governance and electoral strategy, focusing on welfare schemes and social support systems to garner support among Delhi's voters. As the city prepares for another electoral battle, the implementation of the Mahila Samman Yojana will be closely watched by constituents and political analysts alike, marking a significant step in the government's efforts to enhance the lives of women across Delhi.
