Delhi Police Discovers Missing Tripura Student Sneha Debnath's Dead Body

The Delhi Police on Sunday recovered the dead body of a 19-year-old girl, who had been missing for the last week. Deceased Sneha Debnath natively hailed from Tripura and was studying in Delhi University's Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College (ARSD). The Delhi Police found her body under the Geeta Colony flyover in the Yamuna River.

Her parents reported that her phone had been switched off for a week, and they could not establish contact with her. What began as a missing person case has now sparked a broader conversation on youth mental health, urban safety, and administrative responsiveness.

July 7: The Day She Disappeared

On the morning of July 7, Sneha told her mother she would be accompanying a friend to the Sarai Rohilla Railway Station. Her last known communication was a phone call at 5:56 AM. When her family tried calling her again at 8:45 AM, her phone was switched off.

It was later revealed that her friend never met her. Instead, Sneha took a cab to Signature Bridge, a location with a troubling history of suicides. Notably, CCTV cameras at the bridge were non-functional, leaving authorities with no visual record of her movements.

Suicide Note Discovered

In a heartbreaking turn, a handwritten note was found in her hostel room. In it, Sneha expressed feelings of failure and being a burden. She wrote about her decision to end her life by jumping from Signature Bridge, stating clearly:

"There is no foul play. This was my decision."

The note has been submitted to the police and is now a key part of the investigation.

Search Operations and Body Recovery

A joint operation by the Delhi Police and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) covered a 7-kilometre stretch of the Yamuna, from Nigam Bodh Ghat to Noida. Though there were some unverified eyewitness accounts of a girl seen on the bridge, no confirmed sightings followed.

Eventually, a body was recovered under the Geeta Colony flyover and was later confirmed to be Sneha's.

Family's Grief and Questions Raised

Sneha's family has expressed profound grief and frustration over a delayed response. The FIR was filed over 48 hours after she was reported missing. Her father, a retired Army Subedar Major undergoing dialysis, voiced his concern:

"If the CCTV cameras at Signature Bridge had been working, we might have known what really happened to our daughter."

Other details have also emerged:

Sneha had not withdrawn money from her account for four months

She carried no personal belongings on the day she disappeared

She sent emotional messages and emails to close friends the morning she went missing

Public Outcry and Government Action

The incident drew attention from Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who directed the state police to coordinate with Delhi authorities. The Tripura Chief Minister's Office stated via social media:

"The report of Miss Sneha Debnath has come to the notice of the Chief Minister. Necessary instructions have been issued for immediate action."

Meanwhile, Sneha's family took to social media, appealing for public help and government support. They urged people to come forward with any information and not let Sneha become "just another missing person's statistic."
